From a young age, I always kept Mama very close to my heart. He literally brought us up and helped us settle down. He treated all of his nieces and nephews as his own children and he adored all of us. Suthan and I have always been proud of ourselves as we were recognised and cherished by Mama and this meant so much to us. We knew how important Mama and Mami were since childhood as they nurtured us to develop and grow within society. He stepped into a fatherly role and guided us both throughout life and helped us finish our education. We are truly the luckiest people to have a Mama like him as he was so generous and kind. I fondly remember Mama and Mami’s wedding, they were like a Prince and a Princess, made for each other. He was extremely lucky to get married to ‘Mami’, his Sothi darling. As he was such a good-hearted person, we were all so glad they found each other and he mentioned how privileged and lucky he felt about Mami before he left us. In my youth, I always wondered how Mama and his family lived in London and fortunately, we happened to live around him. We shared so many memories and moments with Mama, particularly during Christmas as I was able to see everyone from both sides of the family. I also remember my parents mentioning how Mama visited the hospital when I was born and said to my mother “what a dark girl you’ve given birth to!”. I suppose he forgot I got my colour from him. We shared many moments together and learned a lot from both Mama and Mami and even their children. We were truly so lucky to have spent so much time with our Mama. In all honesty, I was saddened by the loss of Mama more than that of my own parents as he reminded me of our Paata and Ammama. He was just as kind as them and showed so much affection. I will be eternally grateful for everything he did for us, and he will be remembered forever. I’m glad we had a life with our beloved Mama. May your soul rest in heaven.

On behalf of Bala, Lali, Kumar, Kamalini and Ravi, our deepest sympathies in this time of grief. 'Thamby Mama' (as we all learned to call him from his niece Lali), was a favourite of our family, as...
