I am always grateful for the knowledge and dedication imparted to me by Prof. and Mrs. Mageswaran. They were both an extremely intelligent and hard working couple, who dedicated their lives to the sole welfare of their students. The Chemistry department building stands as a testament to their unwavering loyalty and support to students during the war time 1985-2000’s. Every detail of the building was planned and executed by Prof. and Mrs. Mageswaran, and it is the best science building on Campus. We were very fortunate to have been under their direct guidance and to learn dedication and true service from them during the war. Had they left the University during the war, the entire careers of Chemistry Honors students would have been jeopardized and we may have never achieved the goals of getting Ph.D degrees and jobs to support our lives. I will never forget her friendship. She was quiet, super-intelligent, research oriented, faithful and dedicated until the very end to her students and staff at the University Both Prof. and Mrs. Mageswaran came to work by 7 am and left after 6 pm in a red Morris minor car on most days. Even Saturdays saw them working tirelessly inside, teaching, ensuring that chemicals and lab equipment were ordered in time, overseeing all activities of the staff, supervising new lecturers and demonstrators, guiding students to apply to Universities abroad, obtaining Ph. D opportunities for students abroad, counseling students, coordinating curriculum and schedules with other departments, hiring qualified faculty and staff and training them, developing a strong research program, organizing seminars and attending to an endless list of duties day after day. I often think of them when I teach Chemistry to University students here in the US. My challenges seem small compared to theirs and it keeps me motivated to do better. We are blessed to observe a life of such dedication, intelligence and sacrifice. Gitanjali Sathianathan
