A Tribute to Late Professor Rajeswary Mageswaran from the First Batch of Chemistry Students at the University of Jaffna Professor Rajeswary Mageswaran was our teacher, mentor, and friend at the University of Jaffna. We joined University of Jaffna in 1975 and were privileged to be the first batch of Chemistry and Chemistry Special students. We loved the University of Jaffna as something of our own and were hungry for knowledge. We suffered the worst of the brutal effects of standardization and district quota. We wanted to prove to ourselves and to the world that language-wise standardization and quotas are not going to limit us in our achievements. At that time the Late Professor S. Mageswaran was the only person with a doctorate qualification in the Department of Chemistry. Unfortunately, Professor S Mageswaran had to manage the department with only a handful of junior staff, and we were told that another doctorate is coming next year, and that person is a woman and also that she is the wife of our beloved Professor S. Mageswaran. We were thrilled by that news and waited patiently for her arrival. We were instantly elated when she assumed her role inside the classrooms and the laboratories. She along with her late husband Prof. S. Mageswaran were the iconic couple kindling scientific curiosity and scholarship among the crop of Science students at the University of Jaffna for decades. Although Professor Rajeswary Mageswaran had her higher studies in Inorganic Chemistry she taught us from the entire spectrum of Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. She taught topics as wide as from Chemistry of Main Group Elements to Bio inorganic Chemistry, from Atomic and Molecular Structure to Applications of Group Theory and Diffraction Methods and from Coordination Chemistry to Advanced Spectroscopic Methods.
