I am one of the lucky ones who can call themselves a student of Professor Mageswaran and Professor (Mrs) Mageswaran. They were both outstanding professionals who dedicated their whole lives to their students at Jaffna University. The Chemistry department was their home, with hundreds of children to be cared for, both professionally and sometimes at a personal level. I had huge respect for Mrs Mageswaran as our Inorganic Chemistry Professor. She was very calm and quiet in nature, with her trademark glasses on her nose, trying to get rid of a few stray hairs falling on her face by shaking her head from time to time as a habit, all whilst writing equations on the green board. Occasionally, she would just turn around to pause at the hall full of students, who were slightly frightened, and half bemused!! After my university years I met her a few times in the U.K. and recently I was fortunate to know her personally as well. I came to realise that she was just another human being - funny, caring, chatty, with all sorts of issues life had thrown upon her!! We chatted about all kinds of nonsense from debating about Covid vaccines to her living in the same constituency as Theresa May! It was a privilege to have her at my house for lunch, back in December 2019. A big thanks to her brother and one of my friends for arranging her transport. Words cannot describe how sad I am for not being able to visit her as I promised. It was a real shock to hear her being admitted to the hospital and within a few days, the worst news came. It is really sad to let our Madam depart this world, but I am also relieved that she is finally reunited with the love of her life, her best friend and her beloved husband!!! Om Shanthi!!! Jega Ramesh
