I am very saddened to hear of Yaso mami’s passing. She was a woman with undisputed style only second to her kind and loving manner. The first time I met her was on her wedding day. After that, I remember she would routinely visit with Thiyappa and they would take us out to different places. It was during one of those visits they took us to Jaffna and introduced us to the famous Malayan Cafe vadai. Mami also spoke a little bit of English and she would often converse with us using some English words. I still remember the first time I heard the words ‘not enough’ - it was used by her to express her disappointment that there were not enough vadais during one of our trips to Malayan Cafe. While I have many fond memories of her, another one in particular is my sisters and I waiting eagerly for the weekend because she would take us, along with Ragulan and other kids who lived in the surrounding houses, to go fly kites. We would pack snacks and drinks to keep us warm and fed when it would get cold and windy, but it was a great time filled with joy and laughter. Yaso mami, thank you for these wonderful memories I will continue to cherish. I pray you find peace with Thiyappa. You will be missed. Sonthum oppothum thodar kathai thaan, mudivai illathathu.
