Remembering Mama — Mr Vaithilingam Subramaniam (1924–2026) Mama lived 101 remarkable years — born in Kondavil, shaped by Jaffna, and a man who made his mark wherever life took him. As Former Chief Cashier of the Bank of Ceylon, he was someone colleagues and family alike looked up to: sharp, principled, and quietly kind. He was our family's Mama through his marriage to our aunt — a constant, reassuring presence in our Colombo years. When the ethnic conflict scattered us across continents, we lost the closeness of everyday life together, but never the bond itself. We caught each other in glimpses — at weddings, at family gatherings — and it was always enough to remember who we were to each other. In his later years he settled in Richmond Hill, Canada, surrounded by his family — a peaceful chapter for a man who had earned it. His son Senthil — so very much his father's son — left us two years ago, a loss that still sits heavily. Uthaya carries that same warmth and steadiness forward, and in him we see Mama still. To our cousins across the family — from Appa's sisters and brother — we share this loss together. Mama belonged to all of us. Rest well, Mama. What a life. What a man with much Love Ramani, Yasotha and Sashi Mylvaganam
