In loving memory of Professor Robert Siddarthan Perinbanayagam.

As the first anniversary of his passing approaches on 5 November, we, his family, pause to remember with love and gratitude Robert, who left us in New York City, the place he called home for most of his life. Born in Rangoon, Burma, on 14 February 1934, Robert was the eldest child of Amita (Singham) and Saravanamuttu Handy Perinbanayagam, an educator and a founder of the Jaffna Youth Congress. From his parents he inherited a deep love of learning and a sense of purpose that shaped his whole life. He was educated at Jaffna College, Vaddukoddai, and Royal College, Colombo, before going on to the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya where he graduated in 1959. His journey then took him to the University of Minnesota, where he earned his master's degree in 1964 and his doctorate in 1967. Robert devoted his working life to scholarship and teaching. His academic career began at the University of Missouri, Columbia (1967–1970), continued at the New School for Social Research in New York (1970–1972), and found its lasting home at Hunter College of the City University of New York from 1972 onwards. Across these years he shared his knowledge and curiosity with generations of students, and his work remains a lasting part of his legacy. His many friends from all over the world loved him dearly and continue to cherish the memories they have of him. To us, however, he was above all a beloved member of our family. A year has passed and we give thanks for the many years we were blessed to share with him.
