A quiet, unassuming, measured, intellectual above all an affectionate person whom I have had the privilege to call her ‘Tasam Mami’. Mami always kind to me since I was a nipper. In the past two years, Mami wondered about my intention to visit Canada. I am glad I made those two trips and together we watched a lot of ‘Thamil Dramas ‘and ‘Super Singer’ programs on TV. She loved Carnatic Music among many other things. Mami had a great inquiring mind, including in-depth understanding and the nuance of Astrology. Unlike some professional astrologers, Mami stuck to the individual’s horoscope possibilities from her calculations devoid of semantics. Mami was softly spoken yet sharp-witted. I was always careful about what I debated with her because the odds of me losing an argument was pretty good. Sobhana used to chuckle at Mami’s pointed quips of her command in Kings’ English, yup they were learning during King’s reign. Mami and Amma were great friends for almost 75 years till to the end. They used to talk just about anything and yet if anyone cared to ask what did you two talk about and the reply was almost always “ we just talked” there was a virtue of decorum. I still have fine childhood memories of my father, Mami, Mama, uncles and aunts passionately discussing astrology, exchanging newspapers, magazines and articles of varying subjects. Noting Ariyam Mama (Mami's late husband) was the editor of a famous Thamil paper. There were always ample hot Tea and vadais. Good old times could only see them now in black and white photo albums of Tamil diaspora. Mami was a great teacher to many, a fine cook, loving mother, affectionate mother-in-law and doting grandmother was known endearingly as Aththathaa to her granddaughters. A true no-nonsense orthodox cultured generous lady of her generation concluded her life and it is my honour and privilege to call her always as Tasam Mami. I shall miss her!
