It is not often that one mourns the loss of a life that burned brightly to light up one’s life and my aunt was one of those. The last time we met was at my grandfather’s funeral and her welcome brightened up a somber mood brought about by the loss of my father, his mother, and then his father in quick succession. Then, barely in my twenties, I was greeted with a warm embrace as “Annai’s eldest son” and girded thereby for the sad goodbye to my grandfather who was adored by Appa. She took a place in my heart with the assurance that I was worthy of carrying my father’s mantle and gave me the strength to see through the beginnings of my career in academia. Fame, they say, is to live in the hearts of those you leave behind and my aunt in a better place has assured her place in my heart. It is only fitting that my daughter is just beginning her career, also as teacher, albeit in academia and carry on a tradition of molding minds and hearts. Good bye, my aunt, and may the flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.
