About My Friend Saha
Mr Veluppillai Sahathevan
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

V Sahathevan (Saha) Saha and I were in the Engineering Faculty in Sri Lanka during the 1961 -1966 period. He was one year senior to me. Although we did not have much contact during this time, it grew when I joined Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) in 1968. He was already an engineer at SLBC. He worked at the largest shortwave station, Ekala, at that time. I think around 1972, he decided to migrate to the UK. He joined a large communication company and had a very successful career. We kept in touch and whenever he visited Sri Lanka we used to meet. In 1975 I received a scholarship to go to the UK for training under the Colombo Plan. I wanted to take my wife with me but at that time purchasing an air ticket with local currency was not allowed. Saha realised that and sent the air ticket for her from UK. It was a god-send for me, as I would never have been able to do this otherwise. When I travelled to London, Saha was there at the airport to meet me and take me to his residence. During my 7 month stay in UK, he kept a close caring watch over me. Saha and Mala visited us in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Australia and we were able reminisce good old times. We also made telephone contact with each other to exchange new year greetings. I was very sad when I heard of Saha’s passing as I lost a very good friend. I spoke to a few SLBC staff (many have now passed away) and they all remembered Saha as very gentle and kind human being. Rest in Peace Saha.
