கண்ணீர் அஞ்சலி

Naresh Duraiswamy 17 AUG 2022 United States

Thiru Maami as I knew her was a dear first cousin of my father. One year elder to him, she was fiercely loyal to him. Born in colonial Malaya 100 years ago, her/our family represented the early movement of Tamils from North Sri Lanka to the Malay Straits Settlements in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Her father was an idealist and principled Gandhian who only wore hand spun and hand woven fabric manufactured locally rather than rely on imported clothes from Britain, a statement of anti-colonialism. Thiru Maami inherited her father’s principles and moral vision. I remember her as an active lady, independent yet socially conscious looking after her sibling and mother, and countless other patients in Ceylon. She was a well known pediatrician in Jaffna having served in other parts of the island as well. Thiru Maami lived a full life of 100 years having witnessed so much i.e. Malaya in the 1920s, the constitutionalist agitation for independence in colonial Ceylon, World War 2 when Trincomalee was attacked, independence, the race divisions in Sri Lanka and then the brutal civil war. I remember visiting her and her mother just before I embarked to the United States to start my undergraduate education. She remained alert until the very end. I would tap her memory to learn more about my great grandparents. She was a fine lady in every sense of the word. My mother and I send her many nieces and nephews our heartfelt sympathies. May she attain Moksha. May the Siddhas guide Thiru Maami on her onward journey.
