I call my Amamma, Mumamma it’s always stuck she was our grandma. I want to honour her today as her second oldest granddaughter, with the beautiful personal interactions I had, that in fact a lot of us had; imprinted into my life and the life of others. Her eager phone calls to check when we were coming to see her. Her follow up calls 20 minutes later to check if were still coming! To let her know if she needed to put the rice cooker on. Her little sweet treats to take home or give to her grandchildren or great grandchildren. She never left us empty handed especially our children. I remember going shopping with Mumamma when she was able to. How she dressed up to go shopping, pushing her wheelie bag to the Sri Lankan grocers to get the freshest coconuts ; shaking coconuts near her ear to check for the best ones, full of coconut water. She told me that the best drumstick-murinjaka were the ones that snapped and never bent. Mumamma would make the best fish curry with murinjaka curry. It made me want to cook like her. She was a strong woman who cared about eating well, not missing a day to take her vitamins, dressing well. Most of all praying for others and always cherishing the company of her nearest and dearest. Mumamma I hope we can continue make you proud. We know you were always proud of your children, daughter and son in laws, grand children, and great grandchildren. You made us smile with your joy, your wit, your smile, sharp intellect, care and the willingness to be together, like you always wanted. We will always love you and keep your memory alive, alongside grandpa.
