“Don’t leave without eating. You are young; you need to eat well.” Those are the words that will continue to echo in my ears whenever I think of Anna. No matter what time of day I visited his house, he would always begin with the same kindness: “How are you?” And before I left, he would always remind me, “Don’t leave without eating.” And he would not accept any made-up excuse. If I said I had somewhere to be or something to do, he would simply say, “Oh, that can wait.” To him, making sure I was fed was not a small gesture. It was his way of caring, his way of saying that I mattered.
