Chinnacca was the second child in the family and she was called by her given name, but for convenience shortened to “Mahesu”! The third child in the family was my older brother, he was followed by two more girls . The next child in the family is me. Being the second boy in the family I was just “Ordinary” and was therefore called by the full given name Thillainathan; the lowest honour given to any child in the family! However, from my very early childhood, Chinnacca and I were very close to each other probably because we regarded ourselves as the “Seconds” in the family. I was a hyper active naughty child and got into all sorts of mischief; the standard punishment usually is a smack by my parents. But Chinnacca would often come to my rescue and her advice and comfort was always there for me! As a reward I would tell her jokes, which I invented on the ‘spur’. She admired my cheek and the jokes! She had remembered these jokes even now and would remind me how funny they were! There is one very special thing which Chinnacca did which touched my heart! I got admission to Jaffna Hindu College to do the HSC (the equivalent of present day GCE A/L). Around that time Chinnacca was given a boxed “Gold Cap Swan Pen” as a farewell present. Swan pens were very expensive, and on my own, I never could have bought one of these. Without any hesitation Chinnacca voluntarily offered it me, saying this would be more useful to me! I will NEVER forget this in my life! I have noticed that Chinnacca always had on her forehead Viputhi and Kumkumum Pottu. Her last wish was to die as a “Sumangali”, which most Hindu women desire, but only a few achieve! In our family only Chinnacca died as a Sumangali! God had granted her last wish! I understand that Chinnacca’s death was quick and peaceful and I can’t think of a better way to end one’s life. May her soul rest in eternal peace. My dear Chinnacca you will Always be in my Heart wherever you are! We will meet again!
