I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my dear teacher, Param Sir. I first came to know Param Sir through Mr Singarayer from Batticaloa, who was my father’s colleague and Param Sir’s roommate in Nallur, Jaffna. My father had great respect for him, and through that introduction I began studying mathematics under Param Sir during 1988 and 1989, while he was studying at the University of Jaffna. I used to visit his room early in the morning, from about 6.00 am to 7.30 am, before going to school. He taught me completely free of charge, generously giving his time and knowledge while continuing his own university studies. I still remember him writing his university coursework neatly on white A4 sheets. Even as a schoolboy, I could see how dedicated he was. His university friends also came to him for help and to discuss coursework, and he was always willing to share what he knew. Param Sir was exceptionally gifted in mathematics and had a wonderful ability to explain difficult ideas clearly. Studying under him greatly improved my knowledge, confidence and ability in mathematics. The foundation he gave me has stayed with me throughout my life. Many years later, around 2023, I was very happy to find his contact number through Facebook and speak with him again. I had hoped to visit him in Canada and meet him in person, but sadly that opportunity never came. I am especially grateful that I was able to reconnect with him once more. Some teachers remain in our lives long after the lessons have ended. Param Sir was one of those teachers for me. I will always remember his generosity, kindness, knowledge and guidance with deep respect and gratitude. Dear Param Sir, thank you for everything you taught me and for the kindness you showed me. You will always be remembered. May you rest in peace, Param Sir. Om Sai Ram
