I have no idea under what star-sign that he was born, but surely our personalities were in harmony; we had an excellent rapport, a friendship, and mutual respect throughout the time that I remained in the school, until my departure in September 1962 when I won a commonwealth scholarship to go to UK for higher studies. The fact that I was invited to come and spend a few days at his family home at Erlalai during the Sinhala & Hindu New Year period 1962, was symbolic of the regard that he had for me even as a student. I have very vivid memories of that visit, being hosted by his mother and family, then escorting me for sightseeing in Jaffna city, the Fort, eating dhose (for the first time) in a café at the bazaar. Later we visited the KKS Cement Factory, the hot water springs, and pools at Keerimalai, and a missionary farm for grapes run by some nuns. We lost contact after I came to UK in September 1962, but Mr Ranasinghe Silva, my best friend and fellow student at school, who completed his education in Sri Lanka and subsequently worked in the Survey General Dept, maintained a continuing link with him. I am aware that while he was a Superintendent of Surveying at Anuradhapura (later Surveyor General, Sri Lanka) Ranasinghe helped him and family immensely during those difficult years, at the time when they were displaced to Vavuniya. It was also Ranasinghe that reintroduced me to him many years later when he was living at Wellawatte. Soon afterwards he came to live with his son and daughters in UK. Though by now at an advanced age, he was healthy, alert, and active, and I was fortunate to meet him and maintain a continuing close friendship with him during the past 25-years. Naturally, I shall miss him very much, a true gentleman and a beloved teacher from my past for whom I have great respect and affection.
