As a family of 11 children, Mutha anna was there for every monumental occasion – from births, weddings to funerals. I lived with Mutha anna for 15 years until I got married. There was a time when five of the Sooripillai sons lived and sat around the same dinner table at Mutha anna's Kollupitiya house. He truly lived for others. He helped everyone who came to his Kollupitiya home from Karaveddy. Everyone, who once lived in Karaveddy and were departing Sri Lanka, always made a stop in Kollupitiya to stay and have a meal. When he moved from Colombo to Karaveddy, Mutha anna lived in a single room in his Karaveddy house. However he was concerned about the Nunuvil Pillayar Temple priest and insisted we have to build a minimum two bedroom home for the priest and his family. He met his goal by buying the land and building a house with all the facilities for the priest and all future priests to come. Every time a problem arose, Muthanna had a solution. Even if others treated him badly, he never got angered by it or treats them badly in return. He would forget about it and would continue to be a good person. I have asked him many times why he was like this and he always told me “if they are like that, why should we change our way of living. They will never change; there is no point in talking about it”.
