Any good friend of Prof Thurairajah will remember Rajes as a kind and generous host always ready to greet guests wit a broad smile. I, and more than me my mother, had the fortune of being their neighbour in Meewatura between 1975 and 1983. My mother would spend whole mornings with her in the kitchen almost daily after I leave for work. Rajes had a handful at home attending to her little children and preparing food, which she did single-handedly. I do not remember her having fallen ill or even complain of a headache. All of that helped Thurai to devote much time to the Faculty of Engineering where he was most sought after by staff and students alike. We left Meewatura early in 1984 and my mother passed away in 1986. I did not meet Rajes again until after my return to Sri Lanka in 1997, and unfortunately that was much after the untimely demise of Thurai. Life was not easy for her during the war years, especially when she was in Jaffna, and Thurai's departure posed challenges which she faced with great courage. She will be remembered by all who know her for her great qualities which have rarely been spoken of except in conversation among friends.
