So at last, Mr P S Gnanaseelan has quitted his earthly life. Mr Gnanaseelan was one of the most innocent and sincere persons I have come across in my life. He was about ten months younger than me, and throughout our school days at Drieberg College, we sat next to each other. He was extremely good at mathematics. I stayed at his home in Chavakachcheri while preparing for my GCE O/L course. Then Gnanam went to study at Jaffna College and followed the GCE A/L mathematics course. While following the GCE A/L course, he sat for the Palali Teacher Training College entrance examination. He was successful and became a trained maths teacher. Our paths crossed once again when I went to teach at St. Anthony’s College, Kandy. He went to teach at Muslim Mahavidyalaya, Akurana. Later, we came to Jaffna and taught at Jaffna schools. I joined the staff at Jaffna College, and he joined a government school. Gnanam and I married almost within a week of each other. When I think of Gnanam, his deep innocence comes to my mind. In this world of cut-throat competition, Gnanam was a conscientious human being. Gnanam was loved by his students. When his wedding was held in Kopay, a large number of students and teachers came from Akurana to attend the wedding. What was Gnanam’s legacy? Love your neighbours and students. He was a master in making friends. I weep here in Jaffna thinking of this great soul. He had disappointments and failures in his life, but he didn’t lose his fortitude at any time. I thank God for his glorious life.
