A Farewell to a Remarkable Gentleman by Nimsy Simon As someone who had to leave his pursuit of university education behind in order to enter the civil service so that he can support his family after his father was unable to work following a workplace injury, he never seemed to look back in regret. Instead he rose up through the ranks of the Sri-Lankan civil service all the way to the top, retiring as the Deputy Auditor General. Following which he worked in the private sector in Colombo for many years before moving to Canada. Even in his twilight years, he continued to make a difference. Mr. Bastiampillai helped and organized the Mississauga branch of the Ontario Senior Tamil Benevolent Society, holding weekly gatherings with entertainment and snacks for seniors. More importantly, operating a death benefit fund to help with the inevitable and expected final expenses its members. To the end he stayed a much admired and productive member of our society with a positive disposition. We will all miss him dearly but always remember all that he meant to each of us.
