Late Mr. Shanmuganathan was the Principal of Kopay Christian College while I was a student there. He taught “Government” and “Ceylon History” for grade 11 & 12. “Government “was an interesting subject while “Ceylon History” which dealt with ancient kings and their wars was “a very boring subject”. Mr. Shanmuganathan realizing that students won’t be able to fully understand the history of Ceylon, organized 2 separate bus tours for two weeks (one for girls and the other for boys) to visit a few historical places in Ceylon (from Anurathapura, Kandy, Peradeniys, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, Colombo, Puttalam). It was a very memorable tour. For most of the students it was the first time they were out of Kopay to visit other places. Mr. Shanmuganathan initiated a program for male students to cultivate vegetables in a plot at the school backyard. The students in this program were able to sell their produce to the teachers and were able to earn money for themselves. I am very happy to have studied under late Mr. Shanmuganathan and am very grateful for his guidance and support in choosing my career. Vasanthamalini Aruliah (Rajasingham)
