On 6 June 2026, Dr. Chelliah Sornalingam passed away peacefully at his home in New Malden, Surrey, United Kingdom, at the age of 94.

Born on 27 January 1932 in Ipoh, Malaysia, and raised in Navatkuli, Jaffna, Sri Lanka, son of Thillaiampalam Chelliah and Chelliah Nagarathinam. Brother of late Chelliah Amirthalingam and cousin brother to the late Mrs Annalingam, the late Mr Thiruchelvam and the late Mr Thillainadarajan.

On the 10th of June 1960 he married his beloved wife Sathiabama Sornalingam, daughter of Mr and Mrs Nadarajah(Vannarpannai).

Loving father to Sumathini Subramaniam, Manchula Namasivayam, Dr. Narendra Sornalingam and Surendra Sornalingam. Loving father-in-law to Sivananda Subramaniam, Dr. Jayendran Namasivayam, Sivapriya Sornalingam and Sivapraya Mannaru.

Proud grandfather to Lakshmi and Krishanantham, Sasika, Abirami and Ramanan, Ganesh and Suganya, Sivanesh, Sashani, Nishaan, Roshaan and Krishan.

Adoring great-grandfather to Swaralaya, Indhiran, Sivapriyan and our beloved Umadevi.

And dearest Brother in law to Rajeswari Kanthasamy, the late Rukmani Subramaniam, Vijayalakshmi Balendran, Dr. Sivakumaran, Rajakumaran and the late Mangayakarasi Amirthalingam.

Educated at St. John's College, Jaffna, before entering the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Colombo, where he qualified as a doctor in 1958 and later specialised in obstetrics and gynaecology. He began his medical career at the General Hospital, Jaffna, and subsequently served in hospitals throughout Sri Lanka, including Akkaraipattu, Udapussellawa, Kandy, Anuradhapura and Manthikai(Point Pedro).

In 1972, he moved to England to pursue postgraduate training and obtained Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG). He later embarked on a distinguished career in general practice, serving the community of Croydon for more than three decades before retiring at the age of 70.

Outside of medicine, he was a keen sportsman in his youth, playing badminton, cricket and tennis. He maintained a lifelong love of Carnatic music and studied the Mridangam. In retirement, he found great pleasure in cultivating flower gardens, caring for Koi fish and he also enjoyed horse racing.

He will be remembered for his distinguished career in medicine, his remarkably sharp intellect, lifelong curiosity and passionate debates with close friends. There was an unwavering devotion to his family.

He had mastered an art for storytelling and enjoyed bringing people together.

Above all, he was also affectionately known as 'Sorna' will be remembered for his warmth, wisdom, generosity of spirit, and the lasting impact he had on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.

யாழ்ப்பாணம் புனித ஜோன்ஸ் கல்லூரியில் தனது ஆரம்பக் கல்வியைப் பயின்ற அவர், பின்னர் கொழும்பு பல்கலைக்கழக மருத்துவப் பீடத்தில் மருத்துவக் கல்வி கற்று, 1958 ஆம் ஆண்டு மருத்துவராகத் தகுதி பெற்றார். தொடர்ந்து மகப்பேறு மற்றும் மகளிர் நோயியல் (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) துறையில் சிறப்புப் பயிற்சி பெற்றார். தனது மருத்துவப் பணியை யாழ்ப்பாணம் பொது வைத்தியசாலையில் ஆரம்பித்த அவர், அக்கரைப்பற்று, உடப்புச்செல்லாவை, கண்டி, அனுராதபுரம் மற்றும் மந்திகை(பருத்தித்துறை) உள்ளிட்ட இலங்கையின் பல பகுதிகளில் அர்ப்பணிப்புடன் சேவையாற்றினார்.

1972 ஆம் ஆண்டு இங்கிலாந்துக்கு குடிபெயர்ந்து மேல்படிப்பு மருத்துவப் பயிற்சியை மேற்கொண்ட அவர், மகப்பேறு மற்றும் மகளிர் நோயியல் துறையின் அரச கல்லூரியின் உறுப்பினர் (MRCOG) பட்டத்தைப் பெற்றார். பின்னர் பொதுமருத்துவராக (General Practitioner) குரோய்டன் (Croydon) சமூகத்திற்கு மூன்று தசாப்தங்களுக்கும் மேலாக அர்ப்பணிப்புடன் சேவையாற்றி, தனது 70வது வயதில் ஓய்வு பெற்றார்.

மருத்துவத் துறையைத் தாண்டி, இளமைக் காலத்தில் திறமையான விளையாட்டு வீரராக பேட்மிண்டன், கிரிக்கெட் மற்றும் டென்னிஸ் விளையாட்டுகளில் ஆர்வமுடன் ஈடுபட்டார். கர்நாடக இசையின் மீது வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் ஆழ்ந்த பற்றைக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

ஓய்வுக்குப் பிறகு மலர்த் தோட்டங்களை வளர்ப்பதிலும், மீன்களை பராமரிப்பதிலும், குதிரைப் பந்தயங்களில் பங்கு பெறுவதிலும் பெரும் மகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்தார்.

மருத்துவத் துறையில் அவர் ஆற்றிய சிறப்பான சேவை, கூர்மையான அறிவாற்றல், வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் தொடர்ந்த கற்றலின் மீது கொண்ட ஆர்வம், நண்பர்களுடன் பகிர்ந்த சிந்தனைமிக்க விவாதங்கள் மற்றும் குடும்பத்தின் மீது கொண்ட அளவற்ற அன்பு ஆகியவற்றிற்காக அவர் என்றும் நினைவுகூரப்படுவார்.

மக்களை ஒன்றிணைப்பதில் தனித்துவம் கொண்டவராகவும், தனது கதைகளால் அனைவரையும் கவர்ந்தவராகவும் அவர் திகழ்ந்தார். அனைத்திற்கும் மேலாக, அன்புடன் “சொர்ணா” என்று அழைக்கப்பட்ட டாக்டர் செல்லையா சொர்ணலிங்கம் அவர்கள், தனது அன்பான பண்பு, ஆழ்ந்த ஞானம், தாராள மனப்பான்மை மற்றும் அவரை அறிந்த ஒவ்வொருவரின் வாழ்விலும் ஏற்படுத்திய அழியாத தாக்கம் ஆகியவற்றின் மூலம் என்றும் எங்கள் இதயங்களில் நிலைத்திருப்பார்.
