Appamma, no words will ever be able to express how much I will miss you! Even from across the globe, you have played such a pivotal role in all of your grandchildren's lives, including my own! Appamma is one of the most courageous, strong, smart, and kind women I have ever known. I am so grateful to have spent so many memories throughout my life visiting Appamma and getting to know more about my heritage through her. She taught me so many things about my family's life in Sri Lanka and imparted many life lessons that I will carry on forever. I will cherish our many conversations in my broken Tamil, the wonderful meals she made for me, and the love she showed to all. Even from across the globe, Appamma always made sure to call me regularly and be a part of my life's biggest moments, from graduating high school to graduating medical school. No matter how I was feeling at the moment, talking to Appamma always lifted my mood. When I first began medical school, I shared with her my anxiety about starting, and she made me feel confident that I would excel. When I first settled into my new tiny apartment living alone, she showered my apartment with compliments for how I had decorated it. She had the special gift of imparting her warmth onto others. I will always remember her hospitality and love, and I will spend the rest of my life wishing for one more chance to see her.
